Cleaning Guide
Cleaning your crystals can be easy with a little bit of research and caution. Before you reach for the water and sponge it is very important to research and take note of your crystal's physical properties in order to keep it and yourself safe while cleaning. Many crystals react badly to water or soaps, either by changing colour or cracking, or even completely dissolving or leaching harmful substances. Reading our safety guide on the terms and conditions page, doing your own further research and applying common sense should be more than enough to have you happy and healthy with gleaming crystals, but to help you get started we've included some of the basics here for you.

Firstly a good rule of thumb is to always avoid harsh chemicals, strong soaps and hard or scratchy cleaning tools. The best tools are a soft, untreated cloth or a soft brush like a make-up brush for the extra delicate stones. If you do use soap and water, check beforehand to see if that is suitable for the crystal you have and if so, use a mild soap and warm water unless otherwise directed.

When working out whether or not to use water the most important factor is whether or not your crystal is porous. Porous stones are generally but not always at the lower end of the Moh's Hardness Scale and are sometimes completely water-soluble meaning they could dissolve completely in water! Others might simply become flaky, faded or cracked by using water and those that contain metals can even rust!

There are some crystals that can be washed if they are also dried afterwards. If the shape of a crystal means it cannot be fully dried or if there are deep cracks in it, it is better to wipe the outside with a damp cloth and dry, than to submerge it.

Below we have included lists of common crystal choices and how they can be cleaned. These lists are by no means exhaustive so always make sure to check a crystals properties before cleaning or storing in a humid environment like bathrooms and kitchens.

SAFETY NOTE: As stated, some crystals contain harmful substances (or are of particular value), for this reason we suggest gloves when cleaning or handling those pieces to err on the side of caution. As always, research for yourself and please read our safety section on the terms and conditions page!
