Organising Your Crystals

Dropping crystals is not the only way in which they can be damaged.
In addition to storing your crystals properly, organising them correctly can also help to prevent them from getting scratched or chipped along the way.

This of course is very much down to personal preference but here are some suggestions to get you started, remember there is no right or wrong way to organise them.

By Type or Form

If you store tumbled or polished crystals with raw or rough cut crystals for example the polished stones are likely to get chipped or scratched, particularly if stored together in a bag or pouch that sees a lot of movement. Grouping your stones by form can help to alleviate some of this.

  • Tumble stones

  • Raw or unpolished stones

  • Clusters

  • Geodes

  • Polished stones

  • Fragile stones

  • Carved crystals

  • Towers

  • Wands

  • Spheres

Other Ways to Organise Your Crystals

  • Size

  • Colour

  • Chakra

  • Element

  • Intention or use

  • Type of crystal

  • Frequency of use

  • Charging or cleansing needs

Once you have found a system of organisation which works for you and that you are happy with, the next step is to decide how best to store them.

Handy Everyday Use

It might be worth investing in a handy pouch or purse to keep those tumblestones that you like to work with on a daily basis whilst you are out and about or on the go. That way they can be safely tucked into your pocket so as not to be lost and are within reach should you need them. It is worth checking the hardness of any crystals you are wanting to do this with as soft crystals can be easily damaged if rattling about with their harder counterparts. See the Mohs' Hardness Scale as a guide.

The Windowsill is a handy place to keep those that are not light sensitive. Not only will they look nice but they will receive cleansing and recharging from the light of the moon and sun keeping them in good working condition. This is a handy short-term storage method but do make sure that you do not place any which may be discoloured by the sun here.

By the bedside - Many practitioners believe that keeping crystals by the bed (particularly those that can aid with restful sleep) is beneficial and can greatly aid in healing and sleep.

Create an altar or work space - If you do a lot of crystal work you may want to consider creating an altar or specific work space for your crystals and self-care. This can be a small end table or desk with your crystals and maybe some candles or incense.

In & Around The House

Adorning your bookshelves - a pretty and convenient way to display your crystals. Whether you mix them in with your books or dedicate specific shelves or an entire book case this is an ideal and aesthetically pleasing way to store and display your collection.

Display case - a display case is a great idea particularly if you have a large collection or little ones who may be tempted to play with your collection (watch out for those little stones which could easily disappear into a mouth or up a nose). This has the added benefit of keeping them safe behind glass and with many display cases being lockable, out of reach from children.

Box or tray - with so many ornate boxes or trinket trays available you will be spoilt for choice. Whether you choose a small trinket tray to keep your smaller crystals that you use on a daily basis or a larger box which speaks to you big enough for your entire collection it is a handy way to keep them all safe. This is particularly good for those more fragile stones as you can wrap them within the box to keep them safe and prevent damage.

A drawer - You can pick a drawer or even a chest of drawers if your collection warrants it to keep them safe, particularly useful for those crystals not so happy with sunlight or if you have small children or pets who may be tempted to play with them.

When storing our crystals we do not need to hide them away and it might take a little trial and error to find a way of storing them that works for both your own needs and the crystals however it is important to do a little bit of research into your crystals and what environmental situation would best suit them in order to keep them in tip top condition.
