Bronzite
General Information
History
Bronzite (not related to the alloy bronze) was cherished by the Ancient Romans. The Romans believed in the protective and therapeutic powers of bronzite and used it in a form of power to protect themselves. They believed that this powder would protect them from physical disorders and mental confusion. It was also used in a protective amulet because they held the belief that it had magical, even sibylline power.
Geography
This iron rich crystal can be found in a plethora of locations including England, India, Sri Lanker, Germany, South Africa, Austria, Grrenland, Norway, Finland and the United States.
Geology
Belonging to the silicate category Bronzite differs from other silicates in that it contains large amounts of iron and magnesium silicate. This stunning stone usually forms in short, irregular crystals and is the result of meteorological and geological conditions acting on the iron and silica which make up the stone.
Physical Properties
Appearance
Bronzite is a truly beautiful stone; most commonly found in shades of brown (though can be found in green) this crystal typically displays chatoyancy and bright gold flecks that shimmer in the light. In its polished form this stone truly comes into its own with all of its markings and golden swirls laid bare but unpolished can slip under the radar in its raw form.
Moh's Scale
Measuring 5-6 on the Mohs scale, bronzite is reasonably durable but is likely to be harmed at the crystalline cleave if hit hard.
Cleaning & Care
If bronzite becomes dirty and loses its shine you can simply clean it by rubbing it lightly with a clean, soft cloth. If needed you can clean it with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water to remove any dirt clinging to the stone before carefully drying. Please note that bronzite should not be used in gem elixirs.
