Dumortierite
General Information
History
Dumortierite is an extremely rare and much sought after crystal. discovered in 1881 and later named after Eugene Dumortier, a French palaeontologist. Its full name is “blue dumortierite quartz” – quartz referring to crystals constructed from silica.
Geography
Dumortierite is found in Brazil, Europe, Sri Lanka and Peru, as well as both the United States and Canada.
Geology
Dumortierite, also known by its full name Blue Dumortierite Quartz is a form of quartz crystal and falls into the category of aluminium boro-silicate minerals and as with many gemstones, comes in a range of different colours. Most often found in metamorphic rocks that are most often in metamorphic rocks that are rich in aluminium and under high temperatures. Available in a range of colours, colour variations occur with the substitution of iron and other elements for the aluminium.
Physical Properties
Appearance
This stunning crystal can be found in colours ranging from brown to blue and green as well as more rare pink and violet shades. Dumortierite stones may have a waxy, vitreous, dull lustre and is typically opaque with its colour unevenly distributed, which is why some parts will show light to dark colour variations.
Moh's Scale
Dumortierite measures 7-8.5 on Mohs scale of hardness.
Cleaning & Care
Should your dumortierite become dirty you can simply clean it by rubbing it lightly with a clean, soft, untreated cloth. If needed you can clean it with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water to remove any dirt clinging to the stone before drying carefully.
