Fire Quartz
General Information
History
Fire quartz, or Hematoid quartz, has been used in spiritual practices for centuries. Named fire quartz because of the unique colouring of this stone it draws its alternative name, hematoid comes from the Greek word "haima," which means blood again owing to its colouring. Steeped in lore, fire quartz has been used for everything from divination to scrying and talismans.
Geography
Fire quartz is found in Brazil, China, United States, Switzerland, South Africa, Madagascar and Germany to name a few localities.
Geology
Fire quartz is a combination of clear quartz and hematite which is what gives this beautiful crystal its unique flame-like colouring, other colours can be trace amounts of Limonite or Goethite. This macrocrystalline quartz can be found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. With regards to formations, fire quartz can be found in clusters of clusters of pyramids on a geode base. Also occurs as tall prismatic crystals, short stubby crystals, in drusy aggregates, massive, in geodes, and as rounded river worn stones. Quartz is one of the most common minerals found on earth and in the earth’s continental crust however fire quartz is not an overly common variety.
Appearance
This stunning crystal takes its name from the colourful swirls of red, brown, yellow and orange that give the appearance of a lively flame. Fire Quartz is a beautiful crystal filled with eye-catching inclusions. Like other forms of Quartz, it has a translucent finish and a glass-like sheen when polished.

Fire quartz measures a 7 on Mohs hardness scale.
Cleaning & Care
Fire quartz should be cleaned with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. Although it is a durable stone it is important to note the colour of fire quartz, as with many forms of quartz is delicate and if exposed to sunlight will fade over time. For this reason fire quartz should not be charged in sunlight or fire.
