Howlite

General Information

History

Howlite is a stone of many names sometimes being referred to as White Buffalo, Kaolinite, Magnesite, White Turquoise, or even Silicoborocalcite! This versatile stone was first discovered in the 19th century in Nova Scotia by mineralogist Henry How and was initially called Silicoborocalcite however after the meteorologist who made the discovery passed away it was renamed in his honour. Howlite is often used as an imitation stone because of how easily it takes on dye to give it a dazzling spectrum of colours resulting in it resembling other stones such as turquoise.

Geography

Howlite can be discovered in Canada, United States, Germany, Russia, Mexico, and many other places on the planet.

Geology/How it is formed

Howlite, also known as Magnesite, is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that crystallises in the form of masses, nodules and occasional small prismatic crystals.
